1. What Are Cookies
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, or mobile phone) when you visit a website or use an online platform. They serve various purposes, including enabling the platform to function, remembering your preferences, and collecting usage data.
Under Austrian law, the placing of cookies or accessing information stored on your device requires your prior consent, unless the cookie is strictly necessary for the provision of the service you have requested. This requirement is established by § 165 Abs. 3 of the Telekommunikationsgesetz 2021 (TKG 2021), implementing Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive 2002/58/EC. Where consent is required, the processing of the resulting personal data is governed by the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (“GDPR”).
This Cookie Policy applies to the WaveVision online learning management system (the “Platform”) only. The WaveVision marketing website (wavevision.at) is governed by a separate cookie policy.
2. Cookie Categories Used on the Platform
2.1 Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are essential for the Platform to function. They enable core functionality such as maintaining your login session and navigating between pages. They do not require your consent under § 165 Abs. 3 TKG 2021, as they are strictly necessary for the provision of the service you have requested.
2.2 Consent-Based Cookies (Non-Essential)
These cookies are set by third-party content embedded in courses (videos, 3D models) and, during checkout, by the payment provider. They are not loaded unless you give your prior consent through the Platform’s consent mechanism. You may use the Platform without accepting these cookies; only strictly necessary cookies will be set.
The Platform’s own web analytics does not use cookies (see Section 3) and is therefore not part of this category.
3. Cookie Inventory
The following table lists the cookies and similar technologies used on the Platform:
Strictly Necessary
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| MoodleSession | WaveVision (Moodle) | Maintains your authenticated login session while you use the Platform. | Session (deleted when you close your browser) |
| MOODLEID1_ | WaveVision (Moodle) | Remembers your username for the login page (optional convenience). | Persistent (typically 60 days) |
| cc_cookie | WaveVision | Records your cookie consent choice (consent ID, timestamp, accepted categories, policy version) so the Platform can honour it and you are not asked again on every visit. | 6 months (approx. 182 days) |
| __stripe_mid | Stripe | Fraud prevention and payment security during checkout. | 1 year |
| __stripe_sid | Stripe | Fraud prevention and payment session identification. | Session (30 minutes) |
Web analytics (no cookies). The Platform uses Matomo, self-hosted on WaveVision’s own infrastructure (stats.wavevision.at), configured in cookieless mode: it sets and reads no cookies and stores no identifier on your device, and your IP address is anonymised before storage. Analytics data remains on WaveVision’s servers and is not shared with third parties. Because no information is stored on or read from your device, this measurement does not require consent under § 165 Abs. 3 TKG 2021; the related data processing is described in the Privacy Policy (Section 3).
Consent-Based
The following cookies are set by third-party providers only after you activate the relevant embedded content or accept the “Embedded content” category in the consent banner. Until then, embedded videos and 3D models are shown as inactive placeholders and no connection to the third party is made.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| vuid | Vimeo | Tracks video playback usage for analytics. Embedded videos are loaded with Vimeo’s Do-Not-Track parameter (dnt=1), which instructs Vimeo not to set tracking cookies; this row applies only insofar as Vimeo sets cookies despite that setting. | 2 years |
| player | Vimeo | Stores video player preferences. | 1 year |
| Sketchfab embed cookies | Sketchfab | Enable interactive 3D model display within course content. | Varies |
4. Managing Your Consent
When you first visit the Platform, a consent banner is presented. The banner provides clear options to accept or reject non-essential cookies, with both options given equal prominence.
- Accept: Third-party embedded content (videos, 3D models) loads directly, and the associated cookies may be set.
- Reject: Only strictly necessary cookies are set. The Platform remains fully functional; embedded videos and 3D models are shown as inactive placeholders, which you can still activate individually — activating a single placeholder loads only that item, without enabling the category as a whole.
Your choice is recorded in the cc_cookie consent cookie together with a timestamp and the version of this policy you consented to. If this policy or the consent banner changes materially, you will be asked again.
You may change or withdraw your cookie consent at any time via the “Cookie settings” link in the Platform footer, which re-opens the preferences dialog. Withdrawal takes effect immediately for new content; already-loaded embeds are unloaded on the next page load.
Strictly necessary cookies cannot be disabled, as they are required for the Platform to operate.
You may also manage cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies. Note that blocking strictly necessary cookies may prevent the Platform from functioning correctly.
5. Changes to This Policy
WaveVision may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies used, legal requirements, or the consent mechanism.
The date of the most recent revision is indicated at the top of this document. The current version is always available on the Platform.
